Fl Lt Wilfred ’Johnny’ Johnson - Can anyone help the Beeb?
Forces Reunited has received the following request for assistance from Rachel Holmes. Any information you can pass on to her will be welcome. Rachel’s contact details are below. We suggest you contact her rather than us in this instance.
"I work on the BBC 1 series ’Who Do You Think You Are?’ In case you haven’t seen it, each programme follows a well-known British personality as they trace back their family history. We’ve covered celebrities such as Stephen Fry and Jeremy Paxman. The premise of these programmes is to explore a particular person’s family ancestry and the characters within it, with the aim of weaving personal stories into the larger historical context. Each programme provides opportunities to explore a range of different cultural and social histories.
"We are currently looking for info on a relative, a Wilfred ’Johnny’ Johnson, who fought in the RAF’s Coastal Command during the Second World War. The RAF museum has told me that Flt Lt Johnson was gazetted with the Distinguished Flying Cross on 6 February 1945, while serving with 172 Sqdn, Coastal Command, operating out of RAF Limavady, Northern Ireland.
"I was hoping you might be able to help me track down anyone out there who might have served with 172 squadron and remembers Johnny? Or anyone who knows the movements of the squadron around the country during the war years? Might it be possible to post this message on your website?
"Any help you could give me would be much appreciated. Please do not hesitate to get in contact with me if you would like to discuss this further.
Best wishes,
Rachel Holmes"
