War Graves

Last Monday 21/8 I attended a wreath laying ceremony at both the Commonwealth and German Military Cemeteries at Cannock Chase in Staffordshire.

The Staffordshire County Council have strong links with Bremen Germany and every year they host a visit from German youth groups who spend their holiday time cleaning and tending the German War Graves on Cannock Chase. This is the only German Military Cemetery in the UK.

Later in the evening the teenagers held a social evening at their youth camp and prior to the dinner they conducted a small show, which consisted of small sketches, but the main theme was peace throughout the world. It was refreshing that in these very uncertain times these youngsters were prepared to give their time freely to promote peace.

Maybe we could all take a leaf from their book.

War Graves

Mac,A very interesting story and I’m sure a very moving and solemn occasion.Strange as it may seem the only people who tend the German War Graves in Belgium and France are the German school children who visit the cemetaries each year on school trips.
Last year on a trip to Ypres and the Menin Gate we visited many WW1 Cemetaries which are looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves Commision and the local inhabitants. These cemetaries are in an immaculate condition with neatly cut lawns and not one weed in sight. It would seem that many of the German elders dont seem to care as much as we do.If it wasn’t for those school children then those graves would soon be forgotten.

Upon reflection I think the German cemetary I visited was at Langemark. And yes I did leave a poppy behind when I left.

War Graves

Doing a new walk here on Sunday my wife and I came upon a simple but striking memorial in a quiet spot on the edge of the forest. It marks the place where a young RAF pilot and his navigator were brought down and lost their lives in 1944.It’s very well cared for and the inscription in French says "they gave their lives that we may have our liberty"
I’m attaching a picture of the memorial and will try to follow it with a close up of the inscription showing their names and the squadron they belonged to.
