Historical locality

I was following a ’paper trail’ on the Web and came across this Weird Wiltshire site.  It made me suddenly realize that I am very lucky to live in an area of Wiltshire rich in history.  Renowned world-wide for Stonehenge, certainly, but this land of Britain has many not quite so well known places that add to the richness, and it made me wonder if it wasn’t time they got an airing and some well deserved publicity. Do you live close to some big mansion with a resident ghost and DID Queen Elizabeth 1 really sleep there?
I chose nearby Laycock Abbey as everyone knows about JK Rawlings ’Harry Potter’ but this is only one of the many films that National Trust village of Laycock has been the background for. Another of note was the Colin Firth version of Pride and Prejudice. The Abbey itself has a very interesting history including one of the owners being Talbot who took the first ever photographic image in the grounds there.
I have only just found out I have misplaced the photo I had ready but it is easily seen on the web site I mentioned.  So I look forward to some interesting replies or just post a photo
of the famous/not so famous place in your locality.

Teresa we live about 2 miles from Exbury House and gardens which belongs to the Rothschilds. It was requisitioned by the Admiralty in 1942 and became HMS Mastoden. A lot of the planning for D  Day took place here.
We also have Bucklers Hard nearby where ships for Nelsons fleet were built.

St Osyth’s Priory

I live only a few miles from St Osyth’s Priory, St Osyth’s, Essex.

THIS beautiful ruin is situated on an estuary formed by the junction of the rivers Stour and Blackwater, about ten or twelve miles south east from Colchester.
It was a noble foundation for Augustine Canons, and lay near the sea-coast opposite to Mersey Island, the parish being anciently part of the royal domains. Canute granted it to Godwin, Earl of Kent, and the great earl gave it to Christ Church, in Canterbury, by permission of Edward the Confessor.
But the first nunnery was founded for Osyth, daughter of Redwald, the first Christian king of East Anglia and of Wilburga, his wife, daughter of Penda, king of the Mercians.
She was, when very young, entrusted to the care of St. Modwen, at Pollesworth, in Warwickshire. While there she was sent with a book from St. Edith, Alfred’s sister, to Modwen, fell off a bridge into a river, and was said to be drowned. Happily she was restored to life by the prayers of St. Modwen.

You can read much more about the priory by visiting the following website.  It is worth a read.

Two super posts oooh they made my hair stand on end,Nelson, Rothchilds, beautiful picture of Exbury House what a lovely looking place! And Carl you sound so proud of your slice of local history and such a rich one!! its the stuff of legends and so fitting to be brought out into the light. Wonderful names, like a living episode of Cadfael, touching the very heart of what I had in mind when I opened the topic.. Well done both of you and I shall them down to visit on the Web.
We may get swamped in stupid rules that make us feel let down by a Government: who should tell these Alien upstarts to our Island to get out. But we have our roots and its high time we reached out and touched the ’bedrock’ of our history to remind ourselves to be proud of our deep rich heritage..

Look after yourself! it's the only place you've got to live in.

A brilliant idea for a thread Teresa.
I have been trying to find historic stuff about where I live.
There is a Anne of Cleeves House just passed the high street in Haverhill where I live. Very attractive pink tudor house, part of a marraige settlement between Henry viii and anne.
