Favourite poems

Stokes? There I was, thinking it was Samuel Taylor Coleridge,(LOL) who also wrote odes such as:"Apologia pro vita sua" or his "Epitaph" written on 9th November 1833:

Stop, Christian passer - by! Stop, child of God,
And read with gentle breast. Beneath this sod
A poet lies, or that which once seem’d he.
O lift one thought in prayer for S.T.C.;
That he who many a year with toil of breath
Found death in life, may here find life in death!
Mercy for praise - to be forgiven for fame
He ask’d and hoped, through Christ, Do thou the same!

        ABOU BEN ADHEM

Abou Ben Adhem, (may his tribe increase!)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,
And saw, within the moonlight in his room,
Making it rich and like a lily in bloom,
An angel writing in a book of gold:
Exceeding peace had made Be Adhem bold,
’What writest thou?’ The vision raised it’s head,
And with a look made of all sweet accord
Answered ’The names of those who love the Lord.’
’And is mine one said Abou?’ ’Nay not so,’
Replied the Angel. Abou spoke more low,
But cheerily still; and said, ’I pray thee then
Write me as one who loves his fellow men.’
The angel wrote and vanished. The next night
It came with awakening light,
And showed the names who love of God had blest,
And lo! Ben Adhem’s name led all the rest.

Fave poems

Lovely George... makes the blood run cold eh?

My all time favourite is one I heard many years ago and lost. I think the following is incomplete but still worth a mention:

Pray dont find fault with the man who limps,  or stumbles along the road.
Unless you have worn the shoes he wears,
Or struggled beneath his load.

There may be tacks in his shoes that hurt though hidden from view.
Or the burden he bears placed on your back might cause you to stagger too.

Dont sneer at the man who’s down today,
Unless you have felt the blow,
That caused his fall, or felt his shame,
That only the fallen know.

You may be strong, but still, the blows
That were his, if dealt to you,
In the selfsame way, at the selfsame time
Might cause you to stagger too.

Dont be too harsh with the man who sins,Or pelt him with word or stone.
Unless you are sure, yea doubly sure
That you have no sin of your own.

For you know perhaps,if the tempters voice, shall whisper as soft to you,
As it did to him, when he went astray,
T’would cause you to falter too.

Poet Unknown

Sheila B aka Jinxy.... 'If it aint broke dont fix it'.

Sheila.  The Native Americans have a saying which I quote a lot.  They say "Don’t judge a man until you have walked in his moccasins for a fortnight"

Poem?

Not exactly a poem.

People are often: unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind: people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you. Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight.
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, others may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough.
Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God;
It was never between you and them anyway.

The words above were by Mother Theresa of Calcutta.
