RAF Bridgenorth

Hi lads my clear memories of conscription are of marching from Cardington square down the hill to the rail halt inside the camp, where we entrained for Bridgenorth Station.Sadly a young regular had left his civvy case on the parade ground and was ordered to double time up the hill, grab the case and back to the train. The day was scorching (June 1959) and the carridges were like ovens. We were met at Bridgenorth station by RAF buses and driven up to the camp - Hut 25 4 Flight A Sdn. What a shock we all got when a 6Ft 6" MUSCLE MAN APPEARED IN THE HUT DOORWAY SCREAMING AT US LIKE A MANIAC wearing a air of trunks and a tan - WE HAD MET CPL.BELL OUR D.I. AND CONSTANT COMPANION FOR THE THE NEXT EIGHT WEEKS!
Good old Cpl Bell he soon got us into shape and we came to respect him. Two years on I was demobed and I saw him on the TV Saturday afternoon wrestling a couple of times, Kent Walton was the commentator and commented he was a new  hopeful.

RAF Bridgnorth

I served in Bridgnorth from October to December 1958. Our DI was Cpl. (Timber)Wood. I still have my Flight photo signed on the back by all the lads in my hut. I was 17 years of age and a bit giddy. Timber soon knocked that out of me. I still remember that sense of achievement when we all finally marched in step across the square.

RAF Bridgenorth

When did it close down?  I’ve been in Australia for the past 32 years.  Have been back to UK several times, one of which was in 2004.  Drove to Bridgenorth to see what I could remember and asked the way to the camp.  "Oh, you mean the RAF camp?  Closed down mate, several years ago."
Anyway, have fond memories (even if I didn’t think so back then).  Was in A Squadron (red plastic disk behind our cap badge). This was mid-1960 (July I believe).
We travelled by train from Cardington, then coached to the camp.
Recall seeing some airmen painting paving stones with small paint-brushes and others cutting grass with small sissors!  Found out later on that D squadron had just passed out and were having a lend of us new arrivals!
About DIs swearing ... our DI copped a stern talking to by the padre.  You see, we were marching back and forth and our DI decided we weren’t up to it, so he let fly a string of unflattering jargon at the top of his voice.  The padre came out of his office, ordered the DI to halt us and took him to one side.  Upon his return, a very red-faced DI dismissed us for the day!
Ah! Those were the days!
Cheers for now.

Yes i too was at RAF Bridgnorth to do my Squarebashing.
Recall the Train trip as well from Cardigan and then the hussle and bustle of getting settled in.
Our DI was a Cpl Nimmock (his good old saying to us all om parade) (you orrible little man, what are you)  and i only recall the Platton which was D Platoon, cant remember the Flight and Hut number, wish there was someone there who could.
He was really good at smacking that 303 Rifle on parades you could hear it all over.
We won the Passing out Trophy for that intake and we were all so proud.
Yes they were the days never to be repeated, what a shame.
I later went on to Compton Basset for our W/OP course and then we were sent to Innsworth awaiting shipment to Aden on the SS Dunera.
Cheers
Mac
