BBC not concentrating

When will the BBC get it right, another presenter Louise Minchin has just announced that the Queen is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Coronation; She is not!!! It is the 60th anniversary of the Accession.

A few years ago mistakes like that would not have happened. more slipping standards by the Beeb.

Got to agree with you, Colin.
English is being denigrated by an organisation that was once the  pride of Britain. One thing annoys the hell out of me is that some of the broadcasters can’t tell the difference between ’fewer’ and ’less’. Lord Reith must turn in his grave several times a day!!!

Apart from poor grammar, there is poor annunciation too, one glaring example is, that we we are hosting the Olympic Games, the first letter is "O", not "A" they are not the "Alympic" Games, just as there is a Secretary not a secertery.

to be honest I don’t have a problem with people’s annunciation except when they are being highly paid to get it right as national presenters.

BBC not concentrating

Colin,

I’m with you completely on the issue of standards of spoken English and Grammar and one thing which really gets my goat is that few seem to know when to use ’effect’ or ’affect’.

There’s also the fact that fewer newspaper columnists these days have what they all used to have which was a good command of English and a wide vocabulary and was necessary to get a job in that field.

Another pet hate of mine is football reports claiming that So-and-so ’sunk the ball into the net’ and not ’sank etc....’ and reporters in that particular arena seem to be the worst for standards throughout.

When did you last hear someone refer to ’Parliament’ and not ’Parliment’?  I could go on with examples for ages but those should suffice.

TC.

There is one that really gets under my skin and that is when in sport somebody wins , they have "Medaled".
When did the word become a verb or adjective.
