A drunk passenger who hurled racist abuse at fellow travellers on a London underground train in a tirade that became an internet sensation has been jailed for 21 weeks.

Jacqueline Woodhouse, 42, launched an expletive-laden rant at passengers on the Central line, telling those seated near her: ’I used to live in England and now I live in the United Nations.’

A seven-minute video of the verbal assault was uploaded to YouTube and viewed more than 200,000 times.

Condemning her showdown, District Judge Michael Snow at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in central London, said: ’Anyone viewing it would feel a deep sense of shame that our citizens could be subject to such behaviour who may, as a consequence, believe that it secretly represents the views of other white people.’

Woodhouse was fined following a similar offence in 2008.

In the video of her latest foul-mouthed outburst, filmed by businessman Galbant Juttla, Woodhouse can be heard shouting in a thick Essex accent.

Prosecutor Claire Campbell said Woodhouse, who has since lost her job and is now claiming benefits, began her stream of abuse after a retirement party when she was feeling a little ’worse for wear’. She had drunk an unknown quantity of champagne.

Woodhouse sat with her head bowed as CCTV footage of the prolonged rant between St Paul’s and Mile End stations was played to the court.

In it she could be seen turning to the Pakistani man sitting next to her, who is singing his national anthem.

Ron. you don’t add any comment of your own,as this is in every newspaper, word for word and on every tv. news channel what exactly is your point of posting this?. [/I]

I’m sorry John but I dont watch UK TV or read your papers, but I think the simple question "What next?" was intended to ellicit a point of view from people actually living in the UK. Was the sentence imposed too harsh or not. From what I understood on YouTube, apart from the beeped out words which I took to be bad language, the woman was merely stating a fact. I woulod never have tyhought that a person could be sent to jail for stating a fact!

Somehow I think I might be unpopular with my response to this thread.

The woman was drunk and it is common knowledge that ’When drink is in - Wit is out.’ and wit in this instance does not refer to making people laugh.  Taking that into account and making due allowances I feel her sentence is far too severe.

When you hear of the ’Slap on the wrist’ type of response from courts for much more serious offences this, to me, smacks of vengeance and not justice.

She has a perfect right to express her opinion in any way she wishes and we have gone much too far along the road of Political Correctness for my liking.

As Dr Samuel Johnson said many years ago ’A man has the right to say whatsoever he thinks of his neighbour.  Equally his neighbour has a right to knock him down for it if he so feels.’  I know that I have posted that quote several times previously but I make no apologies for doing it again.  It sums up my feelings quite succinctly.

Ron may have had no other motive than to have posted this report simply so that others may read it.  I have no doubt that he will, if he feels inclined, to let us know just why he put in on here.  If he wishes to keep quiet then that too is his prerogative.

I hope that the - so far - gentle sniping either stays at that level or disappears entirely.

It is all well and good watching a video of someone being ’Offensive’ - using the word judiciously but no one apparently took the trouble to film what happened immediately prior to her outburst.

It does raise the question ’Was she in fact provoked into her outburst?’.  After all if someone is singing the National Anthem of another country that could be viewed as being offensive depending on the country of origin of the singer and the reason for said rendition.

I await developments on this thread with great interest.

TC.

Well said Terry. I had not read your contributionj before I replied to John’s question, but I, like you, also believe that political correctness has gone way too far and that it also seems to be a one way thing.

Ron.

May I just point out that I read your post and took it to be what it was -  a statement ....What Next! (Exclamation Mark) and not a question...What Next? (Question Mark)....and I read it  simply as a piece of news, (which I had not seen on TV or in the Press). Other posts are written in a similar vein on this site without reply.

The woman was sent to jail, she had a previous conviction. I agree with Terry’s posts also...unfortunately threads get hijacked on here....hence not many posters.....plenty of "Viewers"....

Alright Ron, I don’t think this was PC (which I also hate) this was behaviour aimed at causing offence in the crudest way possible. Let’s say that instead of taking it one of the Asian men had belted her in the mouth (which if she had been a man she would have richly deserved) what would have happened then?

A situation may be desperate but never serious

Hi John, good to hear from you again. Had he been a man and had he been belted, hopefully he would have belted him back and that would have been the end of it. I still think the whole thing was a gross overreaction by a super sensitive person or persons and yes, I have seen lesser sentences handed out in court for far more serious criminal offences. The woman would make a good Prime Minister who is not afraid to speak her mind. Oh sorry, that’s right, you’ve already had one of those.
