Finding a Casualty

My paternal grandfather Richard Hirst
sustained shrapnel wounds in WW 1. He eventually died as a result of them in 1927. Where is the best source for casualty lists. I have also been told he was in a Black Watch Regiment. Probably served in France.

Usually by far the best place to look is the War graves site, however, at 1927 it would not be in their remit I think?

A service record would give some results: did he serve after 1921?
If so I’ll give you the address of the disclosures unit, if not: the record may well be in the national archive.
