My experience of the RAF, gathered I might say from a safe distance, has led me to believe that having joined up, airmen - flyus vulgaris - develop an urge to emulate the other two branches of the armed forces.
They either want to go to sea with the Navy or dress in combats and stand at gateways frightening passing motorists. This is all well and good until they are returned to their natural environment and their day-to-day tasks, polishing chairs and looking at books of aeroplane pictures. I read recently in the press that the MOD is to spend a considerable sum to provide computer games to provide airmen with near-to-life experiences.

Alright John, Maybe but we’ve got the prettiest uniform, it’s a babe magnet & I’ll have you know the ’Ladybird book of fings wot fly’ has some dead long words in it.

A situation may be desperate but never serious

Scouse, you are a babe magnet, uniform or no uniform. The RAF uniform was designed by Hardy Amies, who also designed the Wrens’ uniform. He wanted airmen to wear black stockings, but Hugh Trenchard said that allowing them to wear a collar and tie was enough without over-icing the cookie. You should take your ’Ladybird book of fings wot fly’ on the Antiques Roadshow, it’s probably worth a bomb. I showed them my ’Ladybird book of fings wot float in Portsmouth Harbour’ and they said it was disgusting and confiscated it.

Who was she, Patrick, this nubile young lady you had to share a room with? That’s taking the call of duty too far, you have my unbounded sympathy. I just hope the room service made up for it.
