When I was a child, smoking was the norm, I didn’t know a family where some-one (an adult) in the house did not smoke, at the age of 15 under peer pressure I started, by the age of 48 I was buying 60 a day. I could not run 20yds, was suffering panic attacks through lack of breath at night, had a horrific smokers cough, bringing up stuff too disgusting to describe, and suffered severe chest infections each winter ( the positive side I could eat any amount of food I liked, and weighed in at 11 stone). After medical examinations told no irreparable damage to lungs as yet, verdict given was, "carry on smoking and you have maybe 10yrs, give up smoking and who knows, what is the length of a piece of string? this was in 1984 So for me not many options, stopped dead. Suffered horrendous withdrawal symptoms  over the next nine months. Vowed never to allow myself to be dependant on any addictive substance again. The downside was I put on 2 stone extra weight.
1995 had heart attack just prior to boarding aircraft in Lanzarote, extremely lucky.

So yes! I abhor smoking, I do not like to be in the same room as some-one smoking, I do not like to be in close contact with some-one who smokes, the smoke impregnates their clothing, and all the de-oderants in the world cannot disguise it. I accept the fact that as an ex- smoker I am over sensitive to the smell of cigarette smoke.

I now walk 5 miles each morning before breakfast in a time of 75 minutes, do press-ups, crunches, pull-ups. light weight training, and 15 mins running on the spot , so kicking the habit has led to a more healthy and active life-style.

Research on the benefits of smoking:-

1/Lowers risk of knee replacement surgery.

2/Lowers risk of Parkinsons disease.

3/Lowers risk of Obesity.

4/ lowers risk of death after some Heart Attacks.

5/Helps the heart drug Clopidogrel work better.

Smokers of the world buy and smoke as many cigarettes as you wish, I would not not deign to deprive you of that right, I just do not wish to be in the vicinity when you light up.

As I have stated many times on these threads I believe in personal choice and responsibility, particularly the responsible aspect.

Never say a humorous thing to a man who does not possess humour. He will always use it in evidence against you.

Yep I remember those, they had a little red tip on the end, addicts ended up with diabetes.

I used to smoke 60 tabs a day.....then stopped completely, no cutting down. I tried the cutting down way several times before that but it didn’t work for me.

How hard must it be for a Circus Ringmaster who smokes as he shouting Roll up Roll up every time he is working.

Maybe T.C. has hit the nail on the  head  with his comment.

It seems that this thread may be drawing towards its conclusion, as TC said all opinions have been aired and discussed. Can I therefore, while I have the chance, relate an incident from my past?

We lay side by side on the bed, our naked bodies glistening in the moonlight shining through the window. "Do you smoke after making love?" I asked her. She smiled and squeezed my hand, "I don’t know, Pet, I’ve never looked!"
