Hello Gwyneth.
I can’t post a full link here as the system will block it (lot’s of people send viruses and other nastys that way you see).

However if you go to www.mansell.com

You can then search via POW camp, if you go to fukuoka camp (all respect to mansell as the site is a vertitable trove of information, but it is hard to read some of the time and a bit ’scattered about’ you’ll see more info about the camp itself.

We got mansells permission to use the info they have along with several other sites and collated those within our own database, hopefully we’ve made it easier to navigate.

re POW Howells

Hi Gwyneth,

Here’s ab it more info for you and I’m guesssing that it’s from the same source as your original info and it’s much the same except for one additional piece of info that doesn’t seem to have been passed on to you.

The address of where the original records are kept.

Although it does now seem as if you were assuming that was him in Germany and that you didn’t already know his regt. for  sure.

Since the family remembers him as having been a prisoner in Japan, I wouldn’t think they would have been wrong about that, so chances are that German Cyril isn’t your relative.

However the records might give you his date of birth which will enable you to eliminate him or any other candidates from your search.

That’s assuming of course that you do know his date of birth.

I assume that he survived the war. ?

I assume that he is now deceased.

If the family have his death cert that should list his date of birth, or you might get from his British legion records if he was a member, or from his former employeer if you know them, or from an old pension book or some other docs of his that the family may have.

Otherwise it should be possible to find that info via some genealogical research online, I can help you with that if you need that, either on here or via email infohere at hushmail dot com.

Meanwhile here’s the info with the source address.

Name:C. HOWELLS
Rank: Private
Regiment:The East Surrey Regiment
Army No:6144859
Camp No:20A
Camp type:STALAG
Camp location:Thorn Podgorz
Prisoner of War No:17373

Record office:
Infantry and Army Physical Training Corps Record Office,
Stanwell Road School,
Ashford,
Middlesex

What an odd place to keep such records. !
