This will give you some more information.

Stalag XXa  is the camp you’re looking for, it isn’t easy to pin down individual records for this camps as it was one of the largest and had separate compounds within the camps and had over 20,000 men at the highest!

If you can let me have the name and rank I’ll check for you tomorrow as we have the full listings.

I also need to mention Tim..i am not sure if this is my uncle..as it only gives the information c howells and not the full name..my uncle was name cyril...and i was always led to believe that he was in a japan concentration camp...as i don’t know a great deal about the second world war...i’m wondering if there’s any information out there regarding japanise concentration camps.

thank-you Gwyneth

Ah, Japanese POW: may be a huge problem.
I’m in the middle of collating our japanese listings and they number of 15,000 names, however some records are very scant, most are japan only (not territories they’d conquered) and I have plenty of information and help from experts that tell me that there’s a good deal of inaccuracy in the original documents.
It’s heartbreaking, but we’ll launch those soon: and they’ll be free of charge completely of course.

I’ve had a quick peek and there is a Cyril Raymond Howells listed but he’s RAF are you at all sure about the service or regiment/rank?

German - I can confirm the details the wartime memories site has given you: they came from the original public record office data which we also have.

There are no Chrstian names in full at all though so this doesn’t help.

Unfortunately the only way to find more officially is to contact the International red cross research centre in Geneva but I belive they take years to find information & even then, with all due respect, it’s not a lot really
and its 200SF (£170) for a request (I don’t think they would be any use for japanese camps as although they did visit, contrary to popular belief) it was very, very few and far between in comparison to the German camps).
