Lot’s of people used to chart the days until they got on the big goes-ome bird, especially those overseas where posting were much longer than they are today.

I never had one, largely because I was happy where I was and didn’t particularly want to go! Some charts were very elaborate affairs, like advent calenders, others were quite simple.

I had opted for five years initial engagement, and I do recall though there were people who had signed on for the full 22/24 or whatever it was.  I eventually did 25 myself, but in a series of engagements. I can recall looking in awe at a fellow 20-year-old in 1960 who wouldn’t reach the end of his engagement till 1984! !984 was a bit beyond my comprehension!

For anyone who served between 1939 and 1958 there would be many who saw these charts inside locker doors especially during the period of 1946 to 1958 when the period of service was known to National Servicemen serving their mandatory time but sdome only had the last 112 days to demob

Could never be bothered to have a chart in my locker, Shrubby, but during the last couple of weeks at Sabratha, I was on DRO duties so posted one on the wall behind the serving counter.
If anyone remembers the cookhouse at Sabratha ( Sgt. Paffey’s Naafi). There was a huge mural of a Comet on the wall.
Cheers, Syd.

Chuff Charts

It would appear that ’chuff charts’ are a part of Royal Air Force tradition, like jim-jams and fluffy slippers.

They would never allow fluffy slippers in the Navy.

Of course fluffy slippers wouldn’t be allowed in the Navy: they’d clash with the feather boa they all wear...!
