As I have read the various posts on smoking, I wondered what amount of money it would have cost me had I not given up the weed in 1984, ( I must admit not without pressing urgency) this morning in the Newsagents I glanced along the array of ciggies, and was astonished at the price of buying a 20 pack, from leaving the forces I always smoked Senior Service, then in the 60s when the health issue came to the fore I tried various brands of filtered cigs, but the only one I could find that satisfied my taste was Players Gold Leaf, which I smoked until  Christmas 1983/4, at that time I was purchasing 3 packs a day.
Assuming that I had carried on buying at that rate until the present time, starting off between 60/70p per pack, and adding the approx increases in between until present time, at a rough approximation I think I would  have  had an outlay in excess of £40.000, a frightening amount. At todays prices I would have been spending
close to £150 per week, £7.800 per year.

So not having to buy fags, at the moment I am not feeling the pinch.

Never say a humorous thing to a man who does not possess humour. He will always use it in evidence against you.

As far as I can tell [until I ask next time I’m in a supermarket], a pack of cigarettes in NZ will knock you back around $18-00 or almost exactly NINE pounds. So if you’re on a minimum wage, it’s an expensive habit! If you smoke 20 a day, that’s 3285 pounds a year!

There are also automatic tax increases I believe, so you can guarantee smokes are never coming down in price.

Alright Colin, Once a government knocks the prices on anything so high it gets out of the reach of the general public the black market steps in. According to HM Customs organised crime has now stepped in on the cigarette smuggling scene, in fact they claim that some have come out of hard drugs because the profits are higher & if caught the punishment is a lot less for smuggling ciggies.

Five or six years ago they ran in investigation by counting the empty packets of fags discarded at Anfield after a match, they found that two out every three packets collected were bought abroad.

A packet of twenty cigarettes cost between seven & eight pounds in the UK to solve this I fly to Spain three or four times a year to stock up on my smokes. In Spain I go to a Tobac & pay the equivalent of three pounds a pack I also but my sons rolling tobacco at less than half the UK price on top of this I get given bottles of Scotch, vodka &/or brandy for shopping there. I was talking to the tobac owner I use in Salou & she reckons that the majority of her customers were from the UK all doing the same as me.

I don’t bother to smuggle or sell off any smokes I just bring in my legal intitlement of thirty two cartons between the wife & I, it not only gives me cheap ciggies but pays for me to have three to four long weekends a year in the sun.

A situation may be desperate but never serious

As a result of reading about the Malbough ciggies, I looked up the Malboro Man in Wikipedia.
I will not say much as you can all read. Several actors were the Malbora man and mostly as cowboys and a few are sea captains etc. Interesting how it converted a ladies cigarette into a mans cigarette in just a few months.
1 fella was the Malboro man for over twenty years.

Thanks for the heads-up gents - it was the twenty year model guy who pegged it due to the noxious weed and Marlborough the company.

Ah - memory, memory - wherefore art thou memory.

Not in NZ it doesn’t! Your personal Duty free allowance of cigarettes is ONE carton!
