Owen,

I said three others because it was three others that were accused of the offence.  The forth soldier took no part and the sixth was charged with failing to report the matter after learning about it.

I ask again, what hold or power did Green have over a Sergeant?

Green was sentenced to five consecutive life sentences without possibility of parole. Four others had already been sentenced. Three are all serving life with parole after ten years, and a fourth who acted as a lookout is serving a 27-month sentence.

Green said he was acting upon orders from former Specialist, Sergeant Paul Cortez, one of the attackers.

Edit:....There’s a short video clip about this incident in the Special Interest section video search....
Page 4 "What You Didn’t Know About The War"... 3 minutes 4 seconds into it.

Strange....Well it was there just a few minutes ago.

Morality is doing what’s right regardless of what you’re told. Obedience is doing what you’re told regardless of what’s right....What is right is not always popular, and what is popular is not always right.

As far as I remember, Brian, Japan (or representatives of Japan) have apologised on many an occasion with regard to WW11 suffering of British citizens.

People say Japan has not apologised but they have. I have to agree with you, though, what good is an apology? Can it undo all the suffering?  Can it bring  the dead back to life? No. It cannot.  The memory of how the Japanese and some Nazis behaved and other nations remain etched indellibly onto the British pschye (and our allies). This is passed down through our culture and history and even the younger generations seem to have an innate understanding of what went on.

Remembering what went on and not forgiving those who perpetrated the ’crimes’ is understandable and in my book fully justified.  What I don’t think is justified is to, as someone pointed out, take it out on all of the Japanese nation.

Alright Steven, The Japs have indeed said sorry to the allies but have not done so to the Chinese in fact they try to deny anything untowars happened during the Sino-Japanese war. My point is there are still people alive in Japan who sank below the level of animals in their depravity & are in fact venerated for their ’brave deeds’ in the war. Before any change can take place they must first admit to their actions, as this has not taken place you must assume that beneath the thin veneer of civilisation they are still the same animals let loose in 1937.

A situation may be desperate but never serious

The Japanese were bad bastards, no question about it, but they were  not the only country to commit wartime atrocities. Many of the "Japanese" guards in prison camps were in fact Koreans, who were, if anything, more sadistic than the Japs.

I’m not defending what they, the Japanese did, but to suggest that they were the only ones who committed wartime atrocities is quite frankly ill-informed. It was a World War, and all sides were guilty of some questionable action.

Alright Colin, Any sane man would have to admit that, as you say, atrocities were commited by all sides in WW2 the main difference is on the allied side they were one offs & on a small scale (except for the Russians) with the Japs it was official policy & on a massive scale.

As for the Koreans, when you right your right.

It was official policy with the Russians. Rape of any German women was not only condoned, but officers totally ignored it once the Russians entered Germany. In Berlin alone it was estimated that up to 2 million German women were raped.
