Thereís now pressure for the UN Security Council to impose a no fly zone over parts of Libya, this would save lives if implemented. The only problem is the only countries that could realistically inforce this are the USA, France & Italy & as the USA is already over commited, the French wonít do any thing & the Italians canít do it by themselves. At one time we could have helped but unfortunately the handfull of Tornados we have at RAF Akrotiri are fully committed to cover in Afganistan ever since the Harrier was scrapped & the Royal Navy hasnít any fixed wing aircraft.
As for rescueing our people in the desert we could have sent in a few helicopters but alas our helicopter fleet has been cut back by 20% by the same party that slammed Labour for not having enough of them.

THE MIDDLE EAST
I haven’t been able to get on site for a while but I am about to stagger Scouse - I think or at least surprise him. I agree in a large part with what he is saying and that what has happened is a damn sight less than what should have been done to repatriate British citizens from Libya.
Having said that it is not an easy thing to orchestrate. Libya is a big country, the people concerned are scattered in small numbers. The main culprit for the lack of action must be Clegg who was supposed to be occupying the hot seat while Cameron was out of the country.
The important thing to remember is that no-one asked the people working in Libya to go there. Not that I believe they should be left to the mercies of the roaming gangs of mercenaries no matter what may happen. It must not be used as an excuse to leave them in the lurch.
It is, however, because of this very dispersal of people that no one action would suffice to help everyone at one go. Rescue operations cannot be mounted at a moment’s notice in spite off how much we would like it.
Every effort should have been made and earlier than it happened but all other countries have not been one hundred percent effective in their efforts. It is therefore useless to unfairly castigate the present Government.
No one party can be blamed for the lack of suitable aircraft or ships and I am not going to go there. We have bounced that ball back and forth more than often enough.
What is more important is that the remaining people are helped as soon as possible. That the current Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt has said that the SAS is ready to strike is idiotic. Why warn irresponsible people that this might happen although, if they have even a modicum of brain power they will already have surmised that this is on the cards?
I am sorry to see that there is a bit of acrimony creeping into the exchanges on this thread. What expressions are used is up to the individual although I would like to see Scouse dropping the ’unelected Government’ bit. It serves no purpose and is inaccurate to label one Government in that way. No doubt I’ll get a flea in my ear for that.
BLAME?? fairly and squarely on the shiney arses in the foreign office and MoD.I recall the Turkey/Cyprus crisis 74 while stationed at Tidworth, troop of Scorpions(CVRs),emergency to to Lynham they said plane ready to load us, get to Lynham not here go to Brize Norton, rushes off, not here go to Lynham, arrive, not here go to Brize Norton, at last we were loaded up, 36 hours after leaving Tidworth.

Alright John, They are stranded in the desert not at the airport, a point you missed in your haste to try & score a point & bolster up this unelected Government in an attempt to hide their incompetence.
† If pointing out that the might of HM Government couldnít even organise 2 charter aircraft over a week after countries like Albania & Turkey had started to pull itís people out is having a "chip" then stand by, the way there are going be more "chips" to come a lot more.
† If my use of simples is juvenile it must be nearly as annoying as you constantly telling people how & what to post. I use Simples rarely & will not stop just because you tell me so. I & several other posters use it as a humourous aside so live with it.
Scouse. If you care to have a look at my Post it say approx 300 stranded in the Desert , I suggest that its You that is not so hasty and as for the present Goverment it is only You that has a thing about them. I relised many years ago that i can’t change things so accept things as they occur.
Still think folks of our age group should steer clear of "Simples, LoL ect. it smacks of Teenage Language, next thing John you’ll be posting UR instead of You are............... ..T .T.F.N. Pal.
