My normal uniform consisted of skirt, blouse and court shoes.

The first time I had to wear ’boots’ was in Germany to go on exercise but alas no DMS boots would fit a size 4 foot!!

Cadet boots had to be sent from the UK and much to the amusment of everyone else I turned into a real ’Pte Benjamin’ who only wore cam cream because the Sgt told me it was made by Max Factor ......doh !!!

Yes - Vaseline (TM).
Mind you, we aircraft tradesmen had special ones with steel toecaps and suckers on the sole. You could walk up the wing of an aircraft without falling off (suck, squelch, suck), or drop part of an aircraft on your foot without breaking either your toes or a valuable bit of aircraft!

I remember burning off the ’nobbly bits’ with the end of a spoon, heated on the stove in the middle of the billet. Then applying orange peel, lots of spit and polish and buffing with clean cloth. Result, a pair of boots you could see your reflection in.

Oh, the happy hours I spent doing that, when I could have been reading a good book !

LOL

Rocky (ex very smart airman !)

aaahhhh, the joys of d.m.s. boots. I actually thought they were a good bit of kit.
dunno what went wrong with them in the Falklands. Perhaps the quality of the product went down the drain. I remember spending long hours burning them down with the back of somebody else,s spoon, using ONLY KIWI polish. Then building them up to a mega shine, ready for duty as the Battalion Orderly Corporal, only for some mindless tw*t to scuff them just before Razzmans parade.
While we are on the subject of boots, does anybody remember "Boots Cold Wet Weather[C.W.W.]" nicknamed Boots Cobbly Wobbly
[I can smell that polish burning]
P.S. we used to soften them by widdling on them.

Live long. "Steady the Buffs" Graham McDonough.
