As noone else is having ago, I’ll give Tee Cee a rest & slap this one up.

On this day in 1966, an avalanche of mud and rocks buries a school in Aberfan, killing 148 people, mostly school children.

Today in 1805 one of the most decisive naval battles in history was fought. The British fleet under Admiral Lord Nelson defeats a combined French and Spanish fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar. For those who didn’t know France & Spain came joint 2nd.

Poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge was born on this day in 1772 in the small town of Ottery St. Mary in Devonshire.

& finally Leonard Rossiter also chose this day in 1926 to arrive in Liverpool.

On This Day.

Well Mathew, I have to confess it took me a few seconds to realise who your Uncle Guy was.  Either I’m slowing down or having a Senior moment but I’m nothing if not honest.
Yes folks it’s the day we all remember, remember when Guy aka ’Guido’ Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605.  The marking of the plot began two years later in 1607 and the actual discovery was made on the 4th November when he was arrested.
In 1905 Joel McCrae was born followed in 1912 by Roy Rogers whose real name was Leonard Sly so no wonder he changed his name.  It’s said his horse Trigger was the better actor.
Vivien Leigh came along in 1913 as did Lester Piggott in 1935.
Mack Sennett creator of the Keystone Cops died in 1960 and Eamonn andrews who presented This is your Life came to the end of his in 1987.
In 1854 the combined British and French armies beat the Russians at the Battle of Inkerman during the Crimean war and Woolworths first English store was opened in  Liverpool in 1909.

Maybe others will follow Mathew’s lead and let us know their own Regimental or Unit’s significant anniversary day so we can toast their contribution to Britain’s past.

Terry.
Here’s to the Durhams -

Well.
Today in Aussie land it is Melbourne Cup Day.  The one day of the year when the country stops work at about 1200 and dissapears to a club, pub, or racetrack somewhere. They go to watch a silly horse race and bet their life savings on some nag which, in my case, almost always come last. They consumme to much champagne and beer and then spend the rest of the year moaning about how useless the horse is that they bet on.

Strange people, the colonials.

But, I like them. I think I will stay for a bit longer.
