|Well itís been a couple of days since we brushed the codwebs off the old calenders. So lets start with:-|
On this day in 1066 King Harold II of England is defeated by the Norman forces of William the Conqueror or William the Basturd (blue pencil) as he was known at the time at the Battle of Hastings, fought on Senlac Hill. He found it an eye opening experience.
Today in 1947 we entered the era of supersonic flight when U.S. Air Force Captain Chuck Yeager becomes the first man to fly faster than the speed of sound in the experimental X-1 rocket plane.
On this day in 1822, Victor Hugo married Adele Foucher, his childhood sweetheart. The pair had numerous children, and the marriage survived notorious infidelities on both sides. The marriage got off to an ominous start, however, when Hugoís brother suffered a nervous breakdown at the wedding breakfast.
Also on this day in 1944, German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, nicknamed "the Desert Fox," is given the option of facing a public trial for treason, as a co-conspirator in the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, or taking cyanide. He chooses the latter, maybe the Walther PPK to his head at the time helped him choose.
Among the German wounded in the Ypres Salient in Belgium on the 14th October 1918, is Corporal Adolf Hitler, temporarily blinded by a British gas shell and evacuated to a German military hospital at Pasewalk, in Pomerania.
& finally on this day in 1977 actor and singer Bing Crosby (born Harry Lillis Crosby) dies of a heart attack while playing golf, gives the saying a hole in one a new slant.
