On This Day

Hi Mathew,
Yeah, that Scouse is only a good ’un isn’t he?  Nice to see you on here and I look forward to your posts in future.

It’s also the National Day of Uganda celebrating independence after 70 years of British rule.
In 1907 Lord Hailsham (Quintin McGarel Hogg) was born, preceded in 1900 by Alastair Sim and followed in 1933 by Bill Tidy well known cartoonist.  1955 saw Steve Ovett - runner - arrive.
It wasn’t a good day for Gabriel Fallopius, Italian anatomist who researched the reproductive organs.  The Fallopian tubes are named after him.
In 1470 Henry VIth was restored to the monarchy, Yale College received its charter and in 1947 the first call between a car telephone and one in a plane was made above Wilmington, Delaware, USA.
In 1967 Ernesto ’Che’ Guevara was captured and shot dead in the village of La Higuera, Bolivia and finally Elvis Presley divorced Priscilla in 1973.

You learn something new every day don’t you?

Terry.

Once a Lancer, always a Lancer!

In keeping (not inn keeping alas) with the fine tradition set up by Tee Cee, here’s more things you never wanted to know from history:-

On this day in 2002, former President Jimmy Carter wins the Nobel Peace Prize "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development."
Who said officials have no sence of humour.

1915 Nurse Edith Cavell was executed by the Germans in Belgium.

1899 The South African Boer War begins between the British Empire and the Boers of the Transvaal and Orange Free State.

1984 IRA bombs hotel where Margaret Thatcher is staying.

In 1968 Apollo 7, the first manned Apollo mission, is launched with astronauts Walter M. Schirra, Jr.; Donn F. Eisele; and Walter Cunningham aboard.

& finaly on this day in 1975, William Jefferson Clinton marries Hillary Rodham in Little Rock, Arkansas. I wonder if he was given cigars as a wedding present.
