On This Day

I am suitably chastened Sheila although in my own defence I thought I would have had more response with people putting on their own contributions.  We have had a few but I saw it as a moribund thread - I’m sure you don’t need to look that up so I have let it slide.  Anyway, since you have resuscitated it:-

On This day in 1928 was born one Shridath Surendranath ’Sonny’ Ramphal, Guyanese politician who became Secretary-General of the Commonwealth in 1975.  (Will that do you kiddo?)

Also James Heriot in 1916 and Gore Vidal in 1925.  1938 Saw Eddie Cochran arrive preceded by Ray Lindwall in 1921.

In 1226 St Francis of Assisi, the Founder of the Franscican order of monks died.

In 1906 S.O.S bedcame the international distress call signal replacing the call sign CDQ - sometimes explained as ’Come Damn Quick’.
In 1941 the aerosol was patented by L. D. Goodhue and W. N. Sullivan - now we know who to blame for the ozone layer hole!!!!!!!.

TeeCee.

On This Day

Right enough Keith but was it a ’necessary evil’?  What does everyone think?  One sentence answers only please.

On This day in 1884 Damon (Alfred) Runyan made his debut followed by Joseph Francis (Buster) Keaton in 1895 and in 1924 Charlton (Charles Carter) Heston.

1948 saw Sir Arthur Whitten Brown popping his clogs - he flew the Atlantic with Alcock if you remember. 1970 saw Janis Joplin - singer - from a drug overdose make her last bow.

In 1883 The Boys’ Brigade was founded by Sir william Alexander Smith.

In 1988 Bavarian environment minister ALFRED DICK asked people not to yodel in the Bavarian Alps as it was harmful to the environment.  The noise scared the chamois and was driving off golden Eagles and other birds.

Hands up those who think he was very well named.

Terry.

On This Day

On This Day in 1919 Donald Pleasence was born as was Bob Geldof ex Boomtown Rat lead singer and international fund raiser.
On the other side of the coin old Jacques Offenbach German-Born French composer(!) (it says here) snuffed it but his name, along with that of Bach gave rise to a very popular musical joke ie. Bach in a minuet - Offenbach later!! Boom boom!!
This is news to me - see what you think - in 1880 Alonzo T. Cross patented his new stylographic pen, the earliest ’ball pen’ which carried its own ink supply and had a retractable tip.  Looks like Lazslo Biro had been pre-empted.
In 1936 the Jarrow march began.
Lastly for today The Moulin Rouge celebrated its centenary in 1989.

Don’t forget Gentlefolk - your contributions to this thread will be greatly appreciated.  What you did or someone else did or celebrated or anything.  All grist to the mill.

Terry.
