On This Day the RAF claimed to have shot down 185 German Aircraft and it is now known as Battle of Britain Day.
Jean Batten was born - she became the first woman to fly solo from Australia to Britain and back in 1935. Titus Oates whose name evoked many a jest was born in 1649. in 1678 he invented a Popish plot which caused 35 people to be executed before he was found out. He was pilloried, flogged and imprisoned. Agatha Christie came along in 1890 and in 1907 Fay Wray famous for one film - all together now ---- King Kong.
Died this day in 1859 Isambard Kingdom Brunel, engineer and in 1978 Wilhelm Messerschmidt, German aircraft designer.
In 1830 the Liverpool and Manchester railway was opened by the P.M, the Duke of Wellington. William Huskinsson, head of the Board of Trade became the first person to be killed by a train when he stepped out onto what seemed to be an empty line as Stephenson’s Rocket came steaming down. Finally in 1916 tanks went into action for the first time at Flers in the Somme.
