Dont get me wrong about the "deaf" bit....I can think of a thousand and one jokes about it that I have laughed my socks off over. On the other side of the coin, It can make life a bit awkward. Going to parties when they have disco,s or a thousand watt karaoke with a compare who also shouts is totally out. Many with tinnitus also suffer like me with "frequency" deafness which hearing aids help if there is only me and the source of the sound I want to hear. You will find we also are good at confabulation and lying! What words we dont hear, we fill in from memory....some times it does not work to well  My new lady wife has now clicked....."You did,nt hear what I said did you?"...answer,"Nope"......"Then why did you say yes?"......Answer,"Cos its easier than keep saying speak clearly and speak up you daft bat..."

The best laugh was on a recent visit to the tinnitus specialist...lovely young lady who said,"We need to train you to listen to other noises to get rid  by ignoring, the bad noise............." So, when I wake up and the forty two piece orchestra strikes up I have to listen for the gentle sound of waves lapping on the shore......................still listening

I used to visit an elderly lady who appeared to be hard of hearing. One day her family turned up with ear phones and a microphone on about 4 meters of wire.  They connected her up and then the son whispered into the microphone "Mummy can you hear me" and the elderly lady whispered back "No".
Well it made me laugh anyway.  Sheila.

A few years ago I went to have my ears tested with a view to getting compensation for loss of hearing due to aircraft noise, years ago we had no ear defenders so just had to put up with the noise. The tester agreed that I had impaired hearing, he put it at 23% loss. I had a letter from MoD stating that the loss had to be in excess of 25% to qualify and part of the loss was due to age, I was about 55 then.

Ron, Try going through The British Legion, an employee of mine, here in the States , a British W.W 11 exserviceman, suffered the same problem, he contacted the local branch of the Canadian Legion, who are affiliated with The British Legion, they sent him to a U.S service Hospital who took care of him at the British Govt expense  and he also ended up with a small pension.
