Quoting: Syd Smith
Hi all. Well I personally, repeat personally, think this is a great site over all and I am delighted to be a member. However I have to agree ref the lack of response to the Topics generally, goodness knows I have commented many times about this. Fair dues, all the good folk that do take the trouble to think up Topics, including myself, must, as I do, feel very disappointed when having posted a new subject they see it vanish with hardly any  reaction whatsoever. Speaking strictly for myself I am full of ideas and thoughts but it comes to my mind that old expression,"no point in flogging a dead horse" and I feel I have done this time and time again as have others, I have gradually become,  to a large extent disillusioned. Yes I know I am/can be (however as you see it) a boring old stick in the mud but the labourer is worthy of he’s hire. We should remember I think that the amount of comment generally depends mainly on what the members are prepared to subscribe and what they are prepared to put into it. These are just my thoughts and please do forgive me if they happen to jar a little. My very best wishes and respects to all, Syd.

Syd,
Flogging a dead horse is close but, perhaps a little unfair. If you have a plethora of ideas for threads then please do not keep them to yourself. I totally accept that many threads are not picked up. There can be various reasons for this ranging from available time to get involved in long running thread to no apparent interest in said thread. I personally have initiated threads that were away from the norm to see how people may or may not think here. Occasionally they have worked and at other times have been trashed pdq. one example being General/Time Capsule.
I must accept blame for being one of those with tendency to divert threads. There is no ill intent in this; it is quite simply that, once my addled brain lands on a thought I need to express it very quickly before the train leaves the station!!
I often originate threads that are intended to cause diversion as I prefer to keep my postings to a comedic vein wherever possible. This suits many but not all.
We do not all think the same way and therefore will be not always be drawn to a particular thread. Do not let this stop you expressing your thoughts Syd. I for one will read them even if I do not always have the time to pick them up...

Colin,
You refer to regular members only appearing every other day or so. I have to say that this is not my reading of the situation.
You, yourself are here daily as am I (barring domestic issues). So are the Budgie Rustler and many others. Many new members are joining recently so let us hope that they can be encouraged to participate more fully.
However, I do take your point.
Regards,
Mike.....

Gosh!!!!! I have just read the whole string of replies and by jove dont people get upset with each other on here. I have only been a Member for a short while and I am begining to wonder where all the old freindship of our service days has dissapeared to. Yes I can understand that we dont all think the same about different strings but lighten up guys/girls, its only a string, and if the powers that be deem that it is getting a tad out of hand, its up to them to cut the string, thats why we pay our membership, its about time a bit of joviality was injected. Or is there promotion on the cards??? I dont think so, lol. I agree that I use the sight mainly to trace old freinds from my service days and only come into the forums to see whats being discussed, Please let us all support this opening in our lives and just get along with each other..... Yes I said please.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ONE AND ALL

Let your memory be your favorite travelling companion.

I would have thought that there are enough forums and subjects to satisfy all the diverse tastes of the members. If I come across a thread that is of little or no interest to me I ignore it and move on. There are pointless threads that appeal to those with a quirky sense of humour nobody forces another to join in, and if there is little or no interest they soon die a natural death. I have been as guilty as anybody of starting daft pointless threads, I also take part in more serious debate when the mood or subject is with me, isn’t that what this all about.
The point is that with the best will in the world, you can please all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time, but not all the people all of the time.

I have read this right up to the last comments. May I just please make a point or two, and then I will go. I have been banging away on this site for quite a while and totally agree that the site itself is first class. However I would like a pound for all the times I have taken the trouble to start a new topic only to see it disappear with little response, this equally applies to many attempts by others I have seen.
I equally accept that I am a definite stick in the mud but thats the way I am and if my comments and thoughts do not appeal, why look at them.
To me its all about togetherness and forbearance, forbearance in the sense of toleration, we make our comments which may not appeal to others but then so do they. Anyway I will bore you no longer. Best wishes to you all, please do all have a good Xmas, a Happy New Year and hope all is well with you in the future. Its been a pleasure. Syd.

Who’s to know what ‘the’ correct topic will be on any given day.  I, for example, placed this topic purely to acknowledge FR having reached a certain membership, and I could not have known, in advance, of the many and varied responses it would generate.  I also used it lightheartedly, to see if there were any free drinks going at Trowbridge.  Alas, it was not to be!  It’s not Dom’s fault, to be fair, and I feel sorry for him, because I’m aware that he’s afflicted with a certain handicap that affects his arms.  I know that he’s silently suffering a serious physical impediment concerning the limited extent of his reach in relation to the remoteness of pockets.  Back to the subject!  We used to have many discussions some time back – well, a couple of years back, and I think that some of Yogi’s problems might be as a result of familiarity, whereby each is now aware of the others views in general.  It’s surprising how well we’ve come to know each personality, although we’ve never met, and it’s difficult to put forward a topic that would be either humorous or contentious, when we already know what the replies are going to be.  Yogi is straight and can be very blunt, but he’s consistent, and honest, and this ’boring old f*art’ happens to like him a lot.  Pete is quite similar to Yogi in many respects, except that he doesn’t have his ‘bull-in-a-china-shop’ tact.  Syd is the definitive gentleman, who genuinely cares about people and the environment, and have values that extend to common courtesy – a politeness of manner (Now outdated, of course).  I could easily go through the list, and be more descriptive, but it would take up far too much space, though I can say, with an exception, that I like and respect everyone on this site, and wish I could meet you all.  Merry Christmas!!!
