An Englishman’s home is his Castle Or that’s what I’ve heard folks say Surrounded by a Garden Where one can work rest or play The lawn is the focal point of the image Always mowed and edges trimmed neat Accompanied of course by Hammock or swing Or perhaps a latticed Garden Seat Two or three fruit trees to add to the interest Surrounded by many flower beds Roses are there in abundance And flowers with variegated heads Bringing a wealth of colour to this rural scene The Gardeners pride and joy Always trying to improve this private domain And Horticultural knowledge employ The paths are nicely paved and the Patio too Enhanced by the patio Table Suitably covered by a large Parasol And chairs for the BBQ when they are able So now let us walk down the Garden Where the Vegetable plot stands alone Neatly rotovated and tined ready For when the new season’s seeds and plants are sown The potatoes have been in nice and early The spring Cabbage is coming along fine And as it warms up the various seeds are planted Making sure they are neatly in line Spring onions, Spanish onions and also some Shallots There are Carrots Parsnips and lettuces too With Beetroot Leeks Radishes and leeks With Lettuces the whole summer through Moving on into Spring now And seeds are showing through Eagerly awaited by the Gardener Creating plenty of work for him to do Thinning out the seedlings Ridging the potatoes as well Weeding Raking and Tining At fruition these are the things that will tell So it’s time to gently prune the Roses again And the Daffodils pulled and dried Placed away for the Autumn Somewhere safe inside The Magnolia now is in full bud The Peonies coming on well But both short lived if strong winds arrive As previous experience will tell Now it is time for maintenance The lawns need mowing once again Trimming the edges and sweeping the paths The tidiness of the garden to sustain So now it’s all done and the tools are away With the Mower they’re in the shed Think aloud are you glad you’re Gardener Or should you have been a bookworm instead
