If you cast your mind back over the years
Perhaps as a child at school
When Mum would wait at the school gate
Nobody inside the gate was the rule
And as the parents met and chatted
Perhaps about shopping they had to get
Or all manner of everyday things
But sometimes to admire another Mum’s pet
For this was the time the parents used
To give exercise to their pet
And often inspired other parents
A gift for their child they might get
So they’d broach the question quite nicely
And if a canine friend their children might please
They’d browse thro folders and brochures
To see if they’d select one from these
There were Corgi’s, Red Setters and Poodles
Some Chihuahua’s and German Shepherds too
Dachshunds, Beagles and Airedales
Dalmations, Shih Tzu’s to name but a few
Pomeranians, Border Collies, Weimaraners
Rottweillers make some people sigh
Having looked at all these wonderful breeds
‘T was the Jack Russell that caught their eye
When the cheeky young Puppy came before them
A feisty young fellow was he
As if saying go on then buy me please
And a very good Family pet I will be
So home he went them that very d ay
The children were really very glad
As he was very small they named him “Muppet”
He was the first pet they’d ever had
Jack Russell’s are playful and mischievous too
In confinement their freedom they’ll seek
So he was kept on a lead or well fenced enclosure
And no destruction or havoc did he wreak
But he did all the things that new puppies do
“wee’d” on the mat and ran away
But very quickly learned that wasn’t the thing to do
But carry out that function whilst out to play
And as the weeks passed by more adventurous Muppet became
Left on his own a slipper or a shoe he would chew
Then hide behind the settee a she knew he’d done wrong
And realised chastisement was due
When walking in the fields they had to take great care
As “Muppets” hunting instincts might draw him away
And it’s not too unknown for dogs of his breed
To run down rabbit burrows and there stay
After a good outing and returning home again
He’s run around with the children and play
And then quickly eat his food followed by a drink
And settle in his basket for the rest of the day
When the owners went to bed he slept in a wire enclosure
With ample room to move about I have to say
Waiting for the morning sound of someone in the kitchen
To be let out to start another day
