|behind german lines - leslie vincent murray|
My father used to tell of what he did in the war in very small details. I know he was in France blowing up v bombs, I know he was behind German lines for most of the latter stages of the war and was never captured.
I have several photographs of his unit but the one that had the unit details on the back is missing, what I do know is that it said unit ??? preparing for being moved back to allied lines after operating behind German lines.
We have pieced together parts of his history, I know he started the war out in Burma where he was quite ill but was shipped out before the japs got there. He was a radio operator in the RAF but when he came back he appears to have been selected for special ops. I do know this led to him being in France and Holland and I have a half recollection of him saying somehting about the drop at Nimegan (sorry if I spelt this wrong) and the unit only just avoiding capture by the Germans and being hidden by the Dutch until they could move again.
When I first went to europe he mentioned a couple of places to go and visit in Holland but I forgot and never did go. I do know he had the free French medal and I think the legion something or other and a DSO or a DFC but these are missing.
My mother thinks he was a nothing in the war and that he made up the stories but the pictures tell a different tale. But when he was dying of dimentia he began to speak more about the things from then because they were clear as yesterday.
Can anyone help me please even if it only to point me in the right direction to look.
