Alright John, It’s a political decision, they had to mention the enemy civilians killed to keep Germany happy. Don’t forget the kaiser tried, Hitler tried but Merkel has succeeded in ruling Europe. It’s was the same after the war when the Attlee Government refused to give Bomber command a campaign medal or Bomber Harris a peerage. The same politics over people came into play when they wouldn’t let the Poles march in the victory parade for fear of upsetting Stalin.
It was a political decision for the RAF to carry out the carpet bombing of German cities. Churchill and his war cabinet thought it up and then sent for Arthur Harris to implement it. Then they put their hands over their eyes and pretended they knew nothing about it. What struck me as very unfair was that Harris was made the villain when in reality Lord Portal was the architect. As far as the bombing of Dresden was concerned, the city was a major marshalling point for troops and supplies for the Eastern front and the Russians wanted it put out of action. You are certainly right about Merkel, Scouse.

At the time of the Attlee government, Scouse, I don’t think anyone over here was too bothered about what the Germans might think. But, apart from the fact that it’s over sixty years ago now, I don’t believe we, or anyone else in Europe can expect the Germans to pay for debts incurred by countries who, over the past thirty years or more, simply borrowed money to give themselves a lifestyle that they could never expect to pay for. Cheers, Syd.

Alright Syd, It wasn’t German pubic opinion Attlee or Churchill were worried about it was world opinion & the Nuremberg trials using Crimes against humanity in it’s indictment of Reich’s Marshal Goring. I could go on at length but certain members would only accuse me of trying to prove how super-dupper- extra intellyjunt I are.

Hi Scouse. I take your point, though I wonder which part of the world (of that time) Churchill or Attlee wanted to impress? Couldn’t have been America, USSR or China, since they were all in it with us and I didn’t think anyone else mattered much! Just covering their own political backsides is my guess! However, at long last. There is a fitting Memorial to Bomber Command... But I still don’t think that Germany should be expected to carry the rest of Europe’s financial stupidity.
