Hugh.

I see you have posted in the Irish Guards site.

Have you tried searching for "War Diaries 3rd Batt Irish Guards 18 July 1944" or "Operation Goodwood 18 July 1944"?  An insight can be gained as to what was happening around your uncle’s death.

Alright Hugh, Operation Goodwood (the British & Canadian push against Caen) has been controversial since it’s end on the 20th July 1944, it was one of those rare occasions were both sides could claim victory. If, as was first claimed, it was an attempt to take Caen then it was a tactical victory for the Germans as the City remained in German hands; on the other hand if the purpose was to tie down German troops to stop them attacking the US troops taking part in Operation Cobra, (the American breakout of the Normandy beach head) then it was a stategic victory as it succeeded in pinning down 3 armoured, 2 heavy tank & 4 Infantry Divisions. It still remains the largest tank battle the British army has engaged in.

The Americans have claimed that the battle was a success & with out it Operation Cobra would have failed.

A situation may be desperate but never serious
