Prince William

Prince William has been given until the end of this year to decide whether he wishes to continue in his flying career, transfer to another branch of the military or quit the Forces altogether and take on a full life of Royal duties. The deadline has been imposed by the RAF Chain of Command.

It is my opinion that he should move out of the way so that a serious candidate further his career.

Quite agree John, At the moment he and Kate are doing a good job as the modern face of the Royal family and in my opinion they should stick to that.

(Unless, of course, he is after a chest full of Medals like Daddy and Gramps)

I have to disagree with JR and JD.

William did not choose the role of future King it was thrust upon him.  At the moment he is doing his best to balance necessary Royal duties with the life he loves and which he will eventually be forced to give up and he is doing that very well.

When he does take on the role full time that will be it for him until the day he dies.  Unlike us he will not be able to retire.  From the day he was born he has been forced into the public spotlight and will never be able to escape that.

William has worked hard to achieve his dream of being a SAR pilot and according to his fellow crew-mates is a very good pilot and asks for no special privileges. In fact, whenever possible he volunteers for duties in order to help others.

I think he should be allowed to carry on living as normal a life as is possible for as long as possible.

He’s what, second or third in line? Which means he might never be King. So he has to choose between opening a new public toilet somewhere twice a week, or a full time career as a RAF helicopter pilot.

At present, the RAF seems to making allowances for his other duties, but there can be no place for part-time pilots for one very basic reason:  if you only fly occasionally, it means your skills are at risk from not being practiced. Plus it must be a nightmare for the squadron never knowing whether he’s there or not. So he should quit flying and  give his position to someone committed 24/7.

There is another aspect and that is his rank. He’s currently a Flt Lt, to which he seems to have progressed remarkably quickly as it normally takes about five years, and he hasn’t done any of the other secondary duties that all officers must do. Under normal circumstances he would have to do at least five years as a Flt Lt and  possibly complete a staff course before promotion to Sqn Ldr, and it doesn’t look like he’s going down that path.

So my view? I think he should leave the RAF to the full-time professionals.
