cameronian WWII

I’ve tracked down some info on my uncle who was killed in Burma in March 1942. His name was Allan Stewart Thomson (from Thornliebank) but his service record also has an alias under which he served, which was Robert Smith. I’d love to know the story behind that. I know it’s a long time ago, and therefore a longshot, but if anyone out there has any info, I’d greatly appreciate it.
