John and Terry if you go on you tube and print in "Liverpool 1970’s" you’ll see Harry Benden playing an accordian and guess what he’s playing. Martha Rambling Rose Of the Wildwood. This is about 1 minute 15 secs into the film.
He didn’t stay in the Oldham area for long. Terry who would????

Oy!!!!  Watch it mate!!!  You’re talking about the town I used to love and lived in for 76 years.

Got to admit we’re happier where we are now.  The reason may be obvious.

TC.

The Cavalry take part in battles to add tone to what would otherwise be merely a vulgar brawl.

That seems a good idea - calling all Scousers.  Depends on what names we are allowed to use on here.

Seriously though there was a man of that description who used to busk in Oldham in the ’50s.  He used a piano accordion and had a magnificent voice and yes, he did used to sing ’Marta’ (Rambling rose of the wild woods.)

Surely there can’t be two men like that?  Was it or was it not Harry Bendon?   Seems very likely.  The first time I saw him, whoever he was, I remember clearly that it was in Curzon Street as he was walking towards High Street.  He then disappeared into The Albion Hotel (now demolished).

I was with my then girl friend who said she’d seen him quite a few times previously.  He didn’t stay in the Oldham area for long.

isthis the song!     Martha rambling rose of the Wild Woods
               Martha with your Fragrence Divine
Martha Rambling Rose of the Wild Wood
Would you please put your lips
                     Closer to Mine
(cant remember the rest only that my dad when he came home after a drinking session would sing it to my mother before she threw his dinner at him here name was Elsie )

Maurice well remembered it comes naturally to me as my father-in-law used to come into the front room of his 2up 2down little house singing this tune to his wife named MARTHA, it didn’t matter who was there they got the full treatment every time. mind you maurice you had to sing in the "Ale House" at the weekends , and on the last bus or tram.
