In one of his books, Billy Graham, the evangelist, related the story of a Christian missionary who had been put in prison in China by the Japanese. The treatment of the prisoners was extremely harsh, for example, to be found with even a small portion of written Scripture meant the death penalty. But during her incarceration, a small copy of the Gospel of John was somehow smuggled in to her. This meant that at night, she could pull the covers over her head and with the light of a little torch, she would read a verse, then go to sleep memorizing that verse. Over time, she was able to learn by heart, the whole Gospel of John.
As each page was memorized, she would carefully tear it out of the booklet and dissolve it when washing her hands, thus, slowly, removing the ‘incriminating’ evidence.
In 1945, as the prisoners were released, a reporter from ’Time’ was at the gates of the prison camp. Most of the prisoners, he noticed, seemed to shuffle along with their eyes on the ground, worn down spiritually and physically by their brutal captors, but not the little missionary. She walked out through the gates with head held high and a smile.
One reporter seeing this commented, “ I wonder if they brainwashed her”. The Time reporter said, “God washed her brain.”
And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:11) | | Report Post |
