Chrissy.

If he was a Petty Officer (Rating) and an Artificer (Trade) he would have been an Artificer 4th Class.

5th Class=Leading Rate.
4th Class= Petty Officer.
3rd, 2nd and 1st class = Chief Petty Officer
Chief Artificer = Chief Petty Officer.

Any more clues, like his age, (I would say from the Artificer 4th Class abt 21) did he survive the War?
Any ideas on which Trade he was....Engineroom, Electrical, Shipwright?

He would have an Official Number with prefix M between 268001 and 273000!   Seen a number anything like that anywhere?

Is he in the 1911 Census?    Any info however small  will help.

Regards

Ray
