Scotland

I am in no position to discuss the pros and cons of Scottish Independence, neither is this the place.

Since joining the RN in 1949, it has been my fortune to become great friends with many Scotsmen, Welshmen and Irishmen, and, apart from  slight variations in diet, and in the case of Scotsmen, music, we all felt we belonged to the same tribe.

Iain Whitehead sitting on the fo’c’s’le playing his chanter, Taff Morgan whose coffin I helped to carry, and Joe Hanlon, who was the gentlest, funniest bog-hopper that ever lived. We were all British. We were all one tribe, especially when the Yanks were in port!

I’ll bet you Alex Salmon was never in the Forces.

Quoting John Richards: "I bet you Alex Salmond was never in the Forces", I don’t see what difference that makes, John, as I know ex-Servicemen here who are for, and some who are against Independence. I too have memories of friendships with English, Irish and Welshmen during my service time, and changing a London Government to an Edinburgh one will never change this. I also have a son, a daughter and three grandsons who live in Devon, it would be ridiculous to think we’d ever be foreigners to each other.

I do have a Scottish passport. It has a lot of names of whiskies that I have drunk in it. Most good but some better than I deserved.
Not sure how independence would work and whether the English would have to defend the Scots from their own indescretions.
An English Navy, a Welsh Navy and a Scottish Navy?  Would be fun  though.
ps. I am Scottish by Birth and have my Crichton Kilt.

Consult the veteran, not the incompetent Politicians.

Why not John?

I would have thought that the biggest event since the formation of the Union in 300 years would be   a significant enough event to warrant opinion!

Personally, I believe there to is  not one single reason that makes any sense for Scotland to divorce itself from the UK.

Many years ago Quebec wanted to breakaway from Canada and form their own country. Once the big businesses and finance institutions started to pull out of Quebec. The independence for Quebec became a lame duck.
The Scots are a proud and brave breed. They are  surely better to stay in the union, but it is there choice.
