Rev. Roger Perry "noli me tangere"

In the last part of his second letter, the Apostle Peter showed his concern over those who suffer, as he had with the “it could never happen to me” syndrome. Remember how he had told Jesus that he would rather die than deny Him? If the great Peter could fall like that, we should perhaps take note of the warnings he gave us. Even Christians, when things are going well, can without realising it, ask ourselves the question in chapter 3 verse 4 of 2 Peter:
“Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as [they were] from the beginning of the creation.” It is quite natural for us to think as we wait for the return of Christ or when the bus is overdue that it will never come. No matter who is driving, the longer we have waited, the sooner it will come.
The actual time of arrival is another question, why do we want to know when? Is it because we want to be cleverer than other people? Is it so we can go about enjoying ourselves for a while without being disturbed by God? Or is it because we are so miserable, that we long for it all to end? If we are right with God, there is nothing wrong in looking forward to meeting Him face to face. See what St Paul said in Philippians 1:21: For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. But the same verse infers that while we are still alive and conscious, there is work to be done. A dying person can be as strong a witness for Christ as a well one.
This will be the last “thought” for a couple of weeks as I am off with the Memsahib to India on holiday. | | Report Post |
