the fiftys, sixties and seventies remembered

i admit to my children and grandchildren these were times of change // especially for us young uns // the coffee shops // dance halls // who can ever forget the mecca ballrooms always a yates wine lodge nearbye to get a few nips before entering the mecca// gave you that extra bit of courage for dancing// remember to when they banned a record by a singer called twinkle// terry // the older end reckoned it was enticing young lads to do the ton on motorbikes// one group i did find funny were the beatnicks and there poetry readings// anyone remember the film // it/s trad dad// with helen shaperio and john layton // a bit boring but it showed that change was just around the corner// i could go on but i don/t want to boar you and anyway most of you will have fantastic memories of those times // the music // the dances // the clothes//and a decent wage to enjoy the times with /// rock on

the clothes//and a decent wage to enjoy the times with /// rock on [/I]

Robert, I remember September 1951 when I finished an apprenticeship, my wages jumped from £3.5s (£3.27p) to £8.10s (£8.50) per week. In Feb ’52 the old King died and I married a girl with brains enough for two. We rode to Nottingham for a three day honeymoon and came back with £3.00 as our total worldly wealth. In April ’52 I began NS and my wages dropped to £1.6s. (£1.30)
Of course we all had the option of signing on for three years instead of two and a lot of lads did so. Wasn’t much into booze and when it was a gallon of petrol or a packet of fags, smoking never got a look in! But, Happy days. Cheers, Syd.

50’s & 60’s?

I remember them well - that was when we had an Army, Navy and Air Force with many tanks, ships and airyplanes.

When I joined up in 1962 I think my pay was £4-00 a week and I used to send two quid of that to my mother(I had 5 brothers and 4 sisters still at home and dad worked in a foundry)The two quid I had left i used to waste on fags and a couple of beers!
