I was living ashore in Belfast while standing by HMS Eagle when she was being built at the Harland & Wolff yard there The lads in the RUC there really looked after us well and we always relied on them to tell us where and where not to drink. I think we were told to avoid the Falls Rd. area ? We weren’t permitted to wear civvies in those days (1950)so were never out of uniform. I got friendly with a Catholic girl and we went out a few times. One evening she took me to a pub in a Catholic area and when we walked in everyone looked round and stared. But the publican served us anyway but said quietly to me,"Drink quickly lad and get out." But when I showed him the rosary I always wore around my neck he smiled and said,"That might make a difference in here son but not out side.Better get out with the girl as soon as you finish your drink." We took his advice and departed very swiftly I can tell you. Do you know of Waringfield Military Hospital ? | Sparks | | Report Post |
