I served on SRT Wg Khormaksar from July 1966 to Oct 1967, working on Twin Pioneers, Dakota and Andovers. Did an engine change out in the open up at Rayan. I was a lone guard with a 303 and 5 rounds of ammo guarding the main gate to Officers Married Quarters at around midnight in 1967 when a hand grenade was lobbed onto a patio inside the compound killing and injuring some of the occupants. It was suspected that one of the local Arab advisors living in the quarters carried out the attack. Over a month ago

Hello gentlemen. I’m currently writing a book on Aden in the 1960s and would be very interested in hearing first-hand accounts from veterans of all three services. I’m an instructor based at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and I’m writing the book to remind my students of their predecessors’ sacrifices in this part of the Middle East. If you would like to get in touch please email me at aaron_edwards@hotmail.com - I look forward to hearing from you. Best, Aaron. Over a month ago

In Jan. 64 we got called to Kenya to quell a small skurmish then got called back to Aden in April. We were part of a big escort that went to ThUMIER, Radfan. Some of you Army lads might remember me filling your jerry cans from a 200 gal. water bouser. Happy days. Per Ardua. Matty Oates ex-Rockape. Over a month ago

I served in Aden twice at Steamer Point, I was at H.Q. when Mad Mitch went into Crater. I remember him telling me what he thought of Politicians, I had to agree with him then and still do, so nothing has changed, all MP’s should go to such place for at least three months detachment without their expenses. Over a month ago
In Aden as RAF medic 1966-67, left a week or two before total withdrawal. Visited Socotra amongst other medical evacuation details. Apparently amongst the first Europeans there for a century or more. Visited Ataq, and numerous other small outposts in Aden. Casualty recovery duties made me amongst the first into Crater after the police uprising to recover the sole British forces survivor. Still vividly remeber the scene I saw. Over a month ago
I joined as a boy soldier in 1964 and joined the battalion 1st P.W.O. IN 1967 our first big job was the Torrie Canyon in Cornwall i was 17years old then the battalion went to Aden and i was still 17 i had my 18th birthday a couple of months later while patroling the streets of a very hot and very smelly country . Even the camels seemed to take a dislike to everyone in uniform we were barracked in M,aala strait about half way down murder mile i was in C/coy 9 platoon our battalion patroled from Gold Moore to the air field and maybe a little further than that of course we did the clime that every soldier did that was Shamsan at 4-o-clock in the morning the view was great from the top and there at the bottom was the city of crater and first time i had seen that . Now i am with the Aden veterans and there are still stories told about the times we were there we do not have a chandelier to swing but it is good to remanice and keep in contact with the lads that were there see you know Allan Tindall.
