Tensions over the Falkland Islands have risen during the run up to the 30th anniversary of the fight for the Islands in 1982.
Fishing vessels and supply ships have been boarded and impounded and the islanders constantly face harassment to their daily lives from their nearest neighbour, which has escalated since the discovery of oil locally. Argentina is reasserting a historical claim to the islands despite the unanimous rejection of this claim by the Islanders who all regard themselves as British.
907 people on both sides lost their lives before the surrender of the Argentinean forces on the 14th June.
Simon Weston & Forces Reunited believe it is right & proper that the people who inhabit, raise their families and work on the islands have their own sovereignty and decide under whose rule they are governed.

I was on the GLAMORGAN in 1982, we went down there to liberate those proud British Islanders. They deserve to to maintain their heritage. The Spaniards colonized South America, I don’t here them bleating. Argentina is made up from a multi-cultural society, including some of my countrymen from Wales in years gone by, they live in the Patagonia area, a welsh speaking community. They remain independent. I kitted out the first lot of RAF Guys who went to the Falklands, was based in Clothing Stores at RAF Innsworth. They needed our support then and they need our appreciation for what they did now, It was all about freedom and still is. I’m a supporter. 19 days ago

I’m not so sure mate....I wouldn’t put it past the Argies to offer the yanks a sizable chunk of the oil and we could see the yanks siding with the Argies in a very favourable way....even against the UK.........We’ve all seen what the yanks are capable of when the word OIL is mentioned..........According to recent news reports...The yanks have been making noises in favour of talks between the UK and Argentina whilst all the South American countries have formed a block to oppose the UK from keeping the islands.....including banning ships which fly the Falklands flag into South American ports..........(Chile backs the UK and always has done) All as we need now is a weak government...(and we’ve got plenty of that in the UK) and the islands could well be handed back within the next 30 years which isn’t that far away.......Also, Argentinas president has promised Spain full support in getting the Brits off Gibraltar If Spain give Argentina thier support.....If this happens....It could also become a European issue....... 23 days ago

A handfull of men held off the attack for several hrs before succumbing to grater numbers and a lack of ammo. The contingent in the Falklands now are vastly superior in numbers and equipment. Without the element of suprise in their favour I think any Argie invasion would be squashed before it began. We should remember the dead and injured on both sides. Both British and Argentinian. The Galtari regime was pure evil. And the current regime does no justice to the memories of those that died. I think the majority of public consensus is that the Falklands remain British and should the Argentine Republic start a conflict then Britain is expected to defend The Falklands. 1st of all i would like to thank Simon Weston for the way that over the years he has handled himself and has continued to promote the Falklands. I was there at the same time, landed at San Carlos, then moved to Stanley. 847sqdn. The Falklands are British and are worth more to use than any sand pit in afganistan.

having served aboard HMS Glamorgan in 82 i feel our government has let us down with the cuts to front line services. without a carrier and a large enough navel force we would not be able to prevent another invasion. that leaves me feeling sick in the stomach after seeing first hand the death and suffering of friends and shipmates. we cannot let thier deaths be in vane. You know, when I first set foot on east Falkland, my first reaction was "bloody hell, our guys are dying for this s**t hole" BUT, we then met some of the islanders and very quickly realised that it was worth fighting for. They are British, and very proud to be. They are really lovely people who just wish to be left alone as they have been for decades. I saw our guys dying for these people, I was also on Sir Tristram when it was hit along with Sir Galahad. Those great British Welsh guards along with all the navy and the rest, should not have died for nothing.

The Falklands War cost us 255 lives. We no longer have any carriers or Harriers thanks to MoD incompetence. If another invasion were to occur the cost of retaking the Islands could be high due to lack of any air cover. i was in the falkland islands(stanley airfield) living on RAF coastal.October 1983 to March 1984.Also i/c ref flt.We fought for the islands and lost brave soldiers and navy ships/personnel.We got it back,we still own it and will always own it..The last argies inhabitants were in 1853,we have had them ever since. Speaking as some one who was there in 82, without the two ’Carriers’ [Hermes and Invincible] and their ’joint’ RN/RAF Harrier Force, the ’mission’ to retake the FI would have been most aptly described as ’Mission Impossible!’
Like you, I too alway’s thought of the Tories as being the ’pro’ the Armed Forces party, sadly under DC that position has now changed. The loss of HMS Ark Royal and her [and the RAF’s] Harrier Force was a fatal blow to every one who has [and still does!] serve in the UK Armed Forces.

have just read a disturbing report in todays daily mail 14/03/2012 where briton and argie were to sign a contract in 74 for joint rule over the islands but was scrapped as Peron died before he signed.Lets hope some mp doe not decide to resurrect this one also why are we sending millions of pounds in aid to them(also in daily mail)

They are more British than we are and deserve the right to select which style of Goverment they want, I was there in 82 along with many others and I have met many islanders since in this country, they all say the same things today as they did 30 years ago, we all know what that is. Major General Julian Thompson was right in his recent comments that our forces are "Lions led by donkeys". An old saying but how true!! Our servicemen and women have been consistantly let down by successive governments. I always thought that the Tories were always pro forces but I have been proved wrong, very wrong. These patriotic comments are so commendable. That we still have such people is wonderful. The Falklands never belonged to Argentina. They, and Argentina belonged to Spain. We took the Falklands from Spain and then Argentina gained independence from Spain. The people of the Falklands must be free but unfortunately freedom does not come for free, we have to fight for it and fight to keep it. My first visit was 1959 onboard HMS Protector.We even encountered problems then with being confronted down South by an Argie Navy ship protesting that we were sailing in thier waters without permission_evidently their Captain had not heard of the recently signed Antarctic treaty which permitted us to do so in any case. HMS Protector Association now are members of The Falkland Island Association. I served with 5 Bde in 82, and the locals I met were brilliant. They were British and wish to stay that way. The only worrying thing now is, should the Argies invade again, we can not repel them as we did before. We have no aircraft carriers, no harriers and no service personnel to do the job. I`m not so worried about the rabble rousing Argentinian politicians as I am of some high level brits, who, but for Mrs Thatcher would have handed both Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands over to Spain and Argentina. There are those who would still argue to give them away.
How many of the politicians and the public remember the Korean War,the Malayan campaign,Egypt,Mau Mau in Kenya,Aden,Indonesia. Even the Iraq campaigns (2) and Northern Ireland,which has almost faded from memory. If there is no oil in the Falkland Islands, then be assured that they will eventually go. We can`t afford to garrison them, we will be told. After all we have to support Greece,Portugal,Ireland etc,etc,etc.

The British inhabitants of the Falklands were supported in 1982 by our brave service personnel, who fought and died to protect them, our government and our country "GREAT BRITAIN" should continue to support our British island of the south pacific, I am 63 now but would willingly fight to protect those people living in the Falklands a part of this great nation as I would fight to protect Her Majisty the Queen! I did two trips to the Falklands 82 and 83 and the islanders we met in 83 said the islands are British and should NEVER be handed over to Argentina and they couldn’t believe we came half way round the world to protect them

The Argentines have NO soveriegnty rites over the FI, they have been Britisgh for at least a century or more and the Argies have never (as far as my knowledge) had any settlement on the FI. The sovereignty of these islands, like many areas of the world, was established many years ago. The area is of significant military importance as is Gibraltar. The government has already looked at returning the sovereignty of Gibraltar in recent years to Spain. The Prime Minister is wrong to say that the islands will retain their sovereignty whilst the islanders have that desire. The sovereignty should remain British forever as should Gibraltar. The United Nations should inform Argentina that we are not re-writing history and that sovereignty is not for discussion. I’m a former RM [24 years service] I had the honour to have been part of the Task Force that re-took the Islands in 1982. Two very good former RM friends of mine lost their lives there and many more served there in what was known prior to the Argentine invasion as Naval Party [NP] 8901. Over a month ago

Haven’t the Falklanders already decided what they want a few times over?? What is the problem then with any government anywhere in the world listening to what has already been said. The Falklands have a history that includes many years prior to the 1982 conflict and during all of that time the island people have remained British by committment and choice. Argentina is not a part of their dream.
I did a 6 month tour in the Falklands in 1987 and the people I spoke to wanted the Islands kept Briish. Give the the people their wish and for the people who lost their lives to keep the Islands British.

It will make a nice change for our Troops to be able to shoot at a clearly distinguishable target, No enemy dressed as a peasant Farmer.
Imagine how unbeleivably unwinding it will be to know the person opposite you in the Argentinian uniform is the enemy and is a legitimate target to be stopped at all costs.

If my History serves me, the Spanish Government of the 1680 period Ceded the Falkland Islands to the United kingdom as Part of a Deal to Stop us Robbing the Spanish Main, Long before Argentina was born.

I keep hearing there are no aircraft carriers but HMS Illustrious is still operational. We have no fixed wing aircraft though as RAF won the toss and the Tornadoes won over the Sea Harriers a long held ambition of the RAF to scupper the Fleet Air Arm. Just because the UK have no aircraft carrier’s does not mean we would not be able to respond to an invasion. Our troops are battle hardend the Argentines are not, what a waste of life it would be for the Argentines. I agree with all the foregoing: Argentina has no legal claim to these islands, whatever the nationality desires of the inhabitants, The last owner pre-British annexation was Spain, but prior to that, the islands were in fact, French..... hence the spanish form of the name, "Islas Malvinas", the islands of the people from St Malo (in France!). Only if our government is weak will Argentina own the Falklands. They never owned them in the first place. The Spanish did but Argentina seceded from them . A lot of people on both sides died in the last fight over them. Do the Argentinians want more? Over a month ago
At the time of empire making the Falklands were Spanish. Britain took them. Argentina seceded from Spain so they have no claim to the islands as they have never owned them. If anybody has a claim to them it is Spain and they haven’t up to now. The Argentines tried to steal from Britain because they thought us to be weak. We are not ! I believe that the Falklands should remain British. As an RAF Veteran and still involved with the RAF on a weekly basis I am sorry to say that the RAF is no longer in a position to help in the Defense of the Falkland Islands should they again be invaded - it was touch and go in 1982 Over a month ago

I served in the Falklands and got to know the Islanders very well. They are more patriotic and British than what we are. British they are, British they be and so British they must remain.
