Mike Baillie is correct. NO party will enshrine the ’Military Covenant’ in law. It will mean they are obliged to do the right thing at last and all they really want is for the forces to do as they are told and not to question the so called wisdom of their politicians, who have no respect for anyone but their own fat backsides and pensions. The Isle of Man dose nothing for its ex service men dragging there feet to introduce a covenant it has taken DLA benefits off, lots vets by getting ATOS medical team over on a harsh medical re examination of there cases Over a month ago
There are 14 local councils in the North East of England who were involved in the Military Covenant. As a member of the Durham Light Infantry Association I was invited to attend the South Shields Council Assembly for the same over a year ago. The Covenant was signed early 2012. So contrary to belief, councils ARE up with the game, certainly South Shields and the surrounding local councils. The meeting was open to Veterans and Members of the Public.Parliment need to have local authorities involved/running the show because that is were WE end up after end of service so who better to exercise the Military Covenant. Do you really think that Coucils actually decided to take this mammoth responsibility on without Government direction-COME ON. Sadly civilians/councils DO NOT have a clue about military personnel and their backgrounds so the Military Covenant will hopefully address this over a period of time. I have already been to the opening of a Veterans Centre in Newcastle 18 months ago and a second such centre is planned for Catterick in the NEAR future. It’s a start. Over a month ago
The charity "Community Based Essex Supporting Troops" is leading the way to ensure that Basildon in Essex is on track to sign the Covenant. It is important that serving members of the regular and reserve Armed Forces receive support from their local community. This is important when so many of those serving have returned to the UK suffering from PTSD (combat trauma). We owe a debt of gratitude to those who serve, especially to the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Over a month ago
I think that with proper supervision and a humanitarian ethos this effort can be accepted by all councils not just in the ability to access funds but to give realistic and concrete support for veterans of all conflicts. Parliament could take the first step and properly accept their part in the conditions of their fighting force before and after . just a thought. Over a month ago
I agree that ex servicemen get a raw deal from local councils and the UK government in general Priority for social housing is given to drug addicts, released prisoners, social misfits and immigrants over ex servicemen. Of course the military covenant should be ratified by the government. Over a month ago
Until the "Military Covenant" is enshrined in LAW, no Government (of any political party) will honour it. Every government in the world is in fear of its Armed Forces (in case it may stage a "coup d`etat), so therefore they "play games" with us to keep us always on the hop once we`ve left HM Forces (and away from their direct control), obvious really. So don`t hold your breath thinking that they will enshrine it into law. they really do hold us in contempt. Over a month ago
